Historical Significance

Horagolla is renowned as the ancestral home of the Bandaranaike family, which produced three Sri Lankan Prime Ministers, including the world’s first female Prime Minister, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and her daughter, Sri Lanka’s first female President, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. In 1973, Sirimavo Bandaranaike donated 33 acres of the Horagolla Estate to the state, which later became the foundation for the national park.

Biodiversity and Natural Beauty

The park is named after the abundance of Dipterocarpus zeylanicus (Hora) trees, which dominate its landscape. Despite its small size, Horagolla National Park is home to a variety of flora and fauna, offering visitors a chance to experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty in a compact setting.
