Puttalam: A Land of History and Natural Wonders

1. Puttalam - A Historic Town

Location: 124 km north of Colombo, 98 km from Katunayake International Airport

Historical Significance:

  • Dates back 2,500 years to the arrival of Prince Vijaya.
  • Prince Vijaya and his followers landed at Thambapanni (Kudiramalai), an ancient seaport in Wilpattu National Park.

2. Anawilundawa - A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Nature Reserve: A Ramsar Wetland spanning 1,397 hectares.

Unique Feature: Six interconnected man-made tanks.

Wildlife Highlights:

  • Home to rare herbs, medicinal plants, reptiles, mammals, fish, and butterflies.
  • Endemic birds & migratory birds (best season: April - August).

How to Reach:

  • Take the A7 Colombo-Puttalam Road.
  • Turn off at 104 – 105 km post (Anawilundawa Junction).
  • Just 10 km from Puttalam town.

3. Thabbowa Tank - An Ancient Reservoir

Historical Importance:

  • Built during the reign of King Kavanthissa.
  • Still a functional water source today.

Location: Along Puttalam - Anuradhapura Road.
