Seruwila Mangala Viharaya

Seruwila Mangala Viharaya: A Sacred Ancient Temple in Trincomalee

Introduction

Seruwila Mangala Viharaya, located in the Trincomalee district, is one of the most revered ancient temples in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. This historic temple, built by King Kavantissa in the second century BC, enshrines the forehead relic of Buddha and stands as a testament to the island's rich Buddhist heritage.

Historical Significance

King Kavantissa, the father of the legendary King Dutugemunu, constructed the Seruwila Mangala Viharaya to house the sacred forehead relic of Buddha. Over the centuries, the temple faced decay due to Tamil invasions from the north. However, in the early 20th century, the Archaeological Department restored the stupa to its former glory, preserving its historical and spiritual significance.

How to Get There

The temple is situated approximately 30 kilometers south of Trincomalee on the coastal road from Trincomalee to Batticaloa. Alternatively, visitors can access the temple from Kantalai via a 45-kilometer road leading to Allai. The journey offers scenic views of the Eastern Province's lush landscapes.

What to Expect

Visitors to Seruwila Mangala Viharaya will be captivated by the ancient stupa and the surrounding remnants of historic structures. The site also features ancient caves and two Buddha figures seated under the hood of the Naga King Mucalinda. An ancient inscription dating back to the second century adds to the temple's historical allure.

Rediscovery and Restoration

The abandoned temple was rediscovered in 1920 by a young bhikkhu from Dodanduwa in the Southern Province. His efforts and the subsequent restoration by the Archaeological Department have ensured that this sacred site continues to be a place of worship and historical interest.

Tips for Visitors

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the serene atmosphere and avoid the midday heat.
  • What to Bring: Comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the ancient beauty of the site.
  • Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly and behave respectfully, as this is a place of religious significance.
